Can flotation automation systems identify ore properties automatically?

Many mineral processing plants hope to use flotation automation to promptly detect changes in ore properties and automatically adjust reagents and process parameters. So, can PLC/DCS systems directly determine ore properties?

The answer is: they can assist in identifying changes, but conventional automation systems cannot accurately determine ore composition based solely on regular operating parameters.

1. What can conventional automation detect?
PLC/DCS can monitor parameters such as feed rate, pulp density, pH value, reagent flow rate, and flotation liquid level.

When these parameters show significant differences from historical operating states, the system can issue an alarm to prompt operators to check the working conditions. However, parameter changes do not necessarily mean that the ore properties have changed.

2. How can ore changes be further identified?
If detection equipment such as online grade analyzers and online particle size analyzers are configured, more information about the ore and pulp state can be obtained. By combining sampling and assaying, historical production data, and process models, it is possible to assist in judging changes in ore properties and their potential impacts.

3. Can the reagent dosage be adjusted automatically?
When reliable detection, validated control strategies, and necessary protective conditions are in place, the system can adjust the reagent dosage or related parameters according to process requirements. However, it should not blindly increase reagents based solely on froth color or a change in a single parameter.
