Hammer Mill vs Raymond Mill: Differences & Application Scenarios
Hammer Mill vs Raymond Mill: Differences & Application Scenarios
June 22nd, 2026
1. Basic Overview
Hammer Mill
A hammer mill is a high-speed impact crushing equipment. It relies on high-speed rotating hammer heads to strike, impact, shear and grind materials to achieve crushing and coarse powder making. It is mostly used for medium-coarse crushing and preliminary pulverization of materials.
Raymond Mill (Raymond Grinding Mill)
Raymond mill is a traditional roller-type ultra-fine grinding equipment. It uses the centrifugal force of the rotating grinding roller to squeeze and grind materials repeatedly between the grinding roller and grinding ring, equipped with built-in classifier to control powder fineness, mainly used for fine powder processing of various non-metallic ores.
2. Core Differences Between Hammer Mill & Raymond Mill
2.1 Working Principle
Hammer Mill: High-speed rotating hammerheads continuously impact materials. Materials are broken by collision between hammerheads, liners and material particles. It belongs to impact crushing.
Raymond Mill: The main shaft drives the grinding roller assembly to rotate. Under centrifugal force, the grinding roller tightly presses the grinding ring. Materials are repeatedly squeezed, rolled and ground into fine powder between roller and ring. It belongs to extrusion & friction grinding.
2.2 Finished Product Fineness
Hammer Mill: Fineness range: 0.5mm ~ 10mm (coarse powder & granular material); no built-in classification device, powder uniformity is poor, cannot produce ultra-fine powder.
Raymond Mill: Fineness adjustable range: 80 mesh ~ 425 mesh; equipped with air classifier, finished powder has uniform particle size, high whiteness and good fluidity, can produce standard industrial fine powder.
2.3 Feed Particle Size & Processing Capacity
Hammer Mill: Max feeding size up to 50mm; hourly capacity ranges from 1–30 tons, suitable for small and medium coarse crushing production lines.
Raymond Mill: General feeding size ≤20–30mm; hourly output 1–25 tons, stable continuous fine grinding capacity.
2.4 Applicable Material Hardness
Hammer Mill: Suitable for soft and medium-hard materials (compressive strength below 150MPa), such as limestone, coal, gypsum, branches, grain, clay, construction waste. Not suitable for high-hardness ores (granite, iron ore), otherwise hammer heads will wear extremely fast.
Raymond Mill: Suitable for medium-hard brittle non-metallic ores (Mohs hardness ≤7), including limestone, calcite, talc, barite, marble, bentonite, kaolin, dolomite. Not applicable for sticky, high-moisture or high-hardness metal ores.
2.5 Equipment Structure & Maintenance
Hammer Mill: Simple structure, small footprint, low investment cost; core vulnerable part is hammerhead, easy to disassemble and replace, ordinary workers can complete daily maintenance.
Raymond Mill: Complex structure, including grinding roller, grinding ring, classifier, fan, pipeline system; vulnerable parts are grinding roller and grinding ring, with long replacement cycle but high accessory cost, requiring professional regular lubrication and maintenance.
2.6 Energy Consumption & Noise
Hammer Mill: High rotating speed, large vibration, high noise; high unit power consumption for fine powder processing.
Raymond Mill: Low rotating speed, stable operation, relatively low noise; higher energy efficiency for fine powder continuous production.
2.7 Dust Control Mode
Hammer Mill: Mostly open or simple dust cover, serious dust leakage without independent air circulation system.
Raymond Mill: Fully closed negative pressure air circulation system, low dust pollution, environment-friendly production.
3. Detailed Application Scenarios
3.1 Typical Application Scenarios of Hammer Mill
Scenario 1: Coarse Crushing & Pre-processing of Raw Materials
Used as primary crushing equipment before fine grinding. For example, crush large limestone, coal, gypsum into small particles below 10mm, then send materials into raymond mill for fine powder making, which can improve grinding efficiency and protect the grinding roller of raymond mill.
Scenario 2: Agricultural & Biomass Material Shredding
Crush corn stalks, wood chips, branches, grain, feed raw materials, straw, peanut shells into granular feed or biomass fuel particles.
Scenario 3: Construction Waste & Road Base Material Processing
Crush waste bricks, concrete blocks, asphalt into recycled aggregate for road backfilling, foundation filler, low-grade building recycled materials, no strict requirement on particle shape and fineness.
Scenario 4: Small-scale Coal, Gypsum Coarse Powder Production
Produce coal powder for boiler combustion, gypsum coarse powder for construction plaster, only need coarse granular materials without high fineness requirements.
Scenario 5: Mobile Small Crushing Station
With compact structure and convenient movement, it is widely used in temporary road construction, rural waste recycling, small mining scattered raw material crushing.
Scenario 1: Non-metallic Ore Fine Powder Processing (Most Common Application)
Produce industrial fine powder of calcite, talc, barite, marble, kaolin, bentonite:
Talc powder for plastic, rubber filler;
Calcite powder for coating, paint, papermaking filler;
Barite powder for oil well weighting agent;
Limestone powder for desulfurization in thermal power plants, building mortar.
Scenario 2: Building Material & Chemical Raw Material Powder Production
Produce gypsum powder, heavy calcium carbonate powder, dolomite powder for cement additives, chemical fillers, water treatment raw materials, requiring uniform powder fineness and stable quality.
Scenario 3: Mine Deep Processing Supporting Equipment
Matched with jaw crusher, hammer mill for complete powder production line: raw ore → jaw crusher coarse crushing → hammer mill fine crushing → raymond mill fine grinding → finished powder.
Process limestone into 200–325 mesh desulfurized powder for power plant flue gas treatment; grind fly ash, slag into fine powder for cement admixture.
4. Quick Selection Principles
If you need granular products, coarse powder, process biomass/construction waste, small temporary projects, limited budget → choose Hammer Mill.
If you need 80–425 mesh uniform fine industrial powder, process non-metallic ores, require low dust and stable finished quality → choose Raymond Mill.
Complete mineral powder production line: it is recommended to configure Hammer Mill (pre-crushing) + Raymond Mill (fine grinding) to maximize production efficiency and reduce equipment wear.
